Barracks will boost work

ARMY barracks in Woolwich are to be developed as part of £200m of improvements to London's military infrastructure.

Ministry of Defence (MoD) chiefs will move extra units to the Royal Artillery Barracks, making it a "core site" for London, along with RAF Northolt and RAF Uxbridge.

Specific plans will be drawn up through consultation this year, with decisions expected next year. Work would take place between 2004 and 2009.

The Royal Artillery Barracks would house units from RAF Uxbridge along with the Royal Military Academy and Victoria House, both already in Woolwich.

An MoD spokesman said jobs were likely to be created through construction work.

Deputy council leader Councillor Peter Brooks welcomed the news saying turning the barracks into a core site would result in extra investment in Woolwich.
