WANT to keep fit and learn a new dance routine? The Mohabbatein Dance Academy specialises in teaching and performing traditional Bhangra and contemporary Bollywood dance routines.

Bhangra is the traditional folk dance of Punjabis, who originate from the north of India but you do not need be from an Asian background to join in the creative and energetic moves.

The academy has been established since 1994 and meets on Mondays from 7pm at Barnhill Community High School, Yeading Lane, Hayes. The sessions are a great activity to try with friends of all ages, and your first lesson is free.

Academy members have appeared in numerous films (Bend It Like Beckham, Kabhi Khushi Kabbi Gham and Mohabbetein), television programmes, pop videos, stage shows and promotional events.

Manjit Bhambra is the director of the school and has danced since the age of four. He moved to Britain from India in 1984 and continued his hobby by performing in numerous movies and demonstrations.

Manjit says: "My main aim in this project is to pull the community together, as you do not have to be from an Asian background to take part.

"Punjab has such a rich culture that I want people to appreciate it and this style of dance promotes that.

"It is also good for fitness and stamina, a reason many people attend the classes. There is also a chance to gain qualifications and a gateway into the world of entertainment."

The teachers at the academy will help you to learn the techniques and dance styles of Bhangra and Giddha, as well as modern Asian and Bollywood film routines.

The academy does not confine its lessons to dance, but also teaches Dhol (drums) as well as Tumbi (a stringed instrument) and Alghoza (similiar to a flute). There is also a strong team of singers.
