AT RUTH Saunders' clinic, acupuncture, massage, reflexology, relaxation exercises and nutrition advice offer excellent relief from pain, compared with conventional medicine which mostly relies on drugs and surgery.
Sciatica, trigeminal neuralgia and carpal tunnel syndrome are just some conditions which have responded very positively.
Ruth is constantly on a quest to learn more and has recently deepened her knowledge of facial reflexology.
This is a holistic health therapy which brings together traditional Oriental medicinal knowledge of energy meridians and acupuncture points with body maps on the face used by the South American Mapuche Indians to diagnose health concerns.
In the historical scope of reflexology, which stretches back many thousands of years, facial reflexology is fairly recent having been devised by complementary therapist Lone Sorenson Lopez.
Facial reflexology treatment covers the entire surface of the face (except the eyelids) and as the therapist carefully manipulates nerve endings, they sense the texture of each area.
Lumpiness ranging from a grain of sand to rice can identify long-standing imbalances, often indicating the root cause of physical discomfort or health problems.
By using a Vietnamese map of the face, a face reflexology session can form the equivalent of a body massage where parts of the face relate to the physical aspects of the body.
Also, out of a possible 564 neurological face points, a specific combination of nerve points are chosen and stimulated to direct impulses via the central nervous system to specific organs.
This can improve blood circulation, balance the body's metabolic chemistry and harmonise your emotional state.
Ruth Saunders has numerous testimonials from customers which show how a variety of painful conditions have been eased with her help...
* Miss S suffered psoriasis all over her body for more than 20 years, including her face and scalp, as well as excessive stress.
After reflexology, being taught breathing exercises and given dietary advice the condition cleared up leaving only a few patches.
* Mr K, 31, was suffering acute stress, headaches and pain, panic attacks and obsessive thoughts but after being taught relaxing breathing techniques and receiving Indian Head massage, he felt energised, well and able to relax at will.
* His friend Mr S, 22, was suffering stress and insomnia to the point where he was about to pass out and had a peptic ulcer.
Having learned the tool of relaxing breathing and received an Indian head massage, he regained normal sleep patterns and said he had never felt so well in his life!
* Golf player Mr R, 75, suffered sporadic shoulder pain exacerbated by certain movements but after a few acupuncture and massage treatments, the problem had gone.
* Ms S, 31, was plagued by bronchitis every winter which completely decimated her immune system and brought her normal life to a halt but after treatment, she is now recuperating from her viral infections.
* Mrs B, 38, had severe sciatica pain.
Every move was painful and she could not even do her housework, however, after acupuncture and exercises to loosen her lower back, she walks her dog daily and does housework painlessly.
* Mr H, 46, suffers from arthritis and stiff joints especially in his hips, knees and feet. He would also regularly suffer from a frozen shoulder.
These problems made him very depressed and he was eventually prescribed anti-depressants to help him cope.
Initially Ruth taught him relaxation techniques and treated him with reflexology which helped him overcome the depression.
Following this he had a regular course of acupuncture which helped clear the pain and stiffness in his hips, knees and feet.
His frozen shoulder also improved which enabled him to return to work.
* Mrs P, 63, suffers from blocked sinuses and runny eyes.
She also had a congestion of cattarh in her chest and muscle pain in her hips which made it difficult for her to sit down and get up.
After several reflexology treatments her eyes no longer ran and her sinuses were much improved.
Acupuncture and cupping in her back also improved the cattarh in her chest.
Before the treatments she was taking antibiotics on and off for months to try to combat these problems.
But after just a few visits to Ruth she was much better.
Ruth wishes doctors would be more aware of the tremendous success she can achieve in relieving pain, and refer patients for treatment with her.
She said, "Care is needed in treating nerve pain, so as not to stimulate it too much which would aggravate it. Using acupuncture and reflexology in combination seems to find the right balance, and results like these speak for themselves."
