Never one to hold back an opinion, Oscar Wilde is believed to have once said that “All art is quite useless”. But organisers behind the In Our Manor exhibition in Finchley would be certain to disagree.

This Friday, the Hesler Gallery will feature a wide variety of artforms, ranging from painting, performance art and photography from 15 of Finchley’s most promising young artists. These include musician, Rhett Nichol, who featured in the Channel 4 documentary Four to the Floor and will be exhibiting three mixed media paintings; photographer Josh T Gibbons, who documented the rise of the underground bass culture in London during the mid-naughties; and Dan Rivon who will be exhibiting his photographs of youth sub-culture.

Curator Sean Rennison Phillips is enthused by the modern approach of the artists and hopes their work will have a positive impact on the community.

“The idea of the exhibition is to introduce local people and businesses to the artists, with the aim of getting them actively involved in projects and work that has a positive impact on the community.”

The gallery with be transformed into an atmospheric space to house a full art installation across three rooms of large scale, light-reactive cut outs, hand-painted typography and photography/painting.

With such a variety of art on display, and with Finchley as a centre-point, Sean hopes the artworks will encourage other artists and businesses to get involved in the future.

“As curator, I hope that the show is a starting point for the coming together of community, commerce, local creatives and schools to organise mural and regeneration projects throughout the borough.

“I also hope that the exhibition attracts more people to the space at Ten Grand Arcade and encourages other artists and businesses to take advantage of the amazing opportunities available to them.”

  • In Our Manor will be exhibited at the Hasler Gallery in full on Friday, November 7, from 7pm to 10pm with some work available to view in the week afterwards. Details: 0203 490 7450, tengrandarcade.co.uk
