PUPILS from six schools will star in the musical of Hairspray this month, with students working on every aspect of the production.

Wycombe High School is putting on the performance and as they needed males for the show branched out to five other schools.

There are students joining the girls from the Royal Grammar School, John Hampden, St Michael's, Wye Valley and The Misbourne.

And the pupils don't just act and sing in the musical but they are also in charge backstage and at the front of house. Freddie Redman, 15, from St Michael's is playing Edna Turnblad.

He said: "It is great fun. You get to meet new people. It is very professional."

Hairspray is set in 1962 Baltimore where Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance programme.

When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show.

Dominique Hamilton, 15, is playing Motormouth Maybelle and goes to Wycombe High.

She said she loves the morals in the musical and of course the songs too, which include Big, Blonde, and Beautiful, Good Morning Baltimore and You Can’t Stop the Beat.

Wycombe High pupil Emily Bowles, 16, is playing Lou Ann and said everyone is really excited about the show.

She said: "We have been given quite a bit budget. A lot it is going into it."

Jonah Halton, 17, from RGS is playing Corny Collins.

He had previously played Link Larkin last year for Wyspas and and said: "Corny Collins is a new challenge. It's really a fun part."

Dominique, Jonah and Freddie are regulars with the Wycombe Swan Youth Theatre Productions and Emily also did it one year.

They all want to go into the world of acting although Freddie is a little bit more reluctant and still deciding. I spoke to them before their outfits had arrived. Freddie has to wear a fat suit and dress up as a woman.

He said: "I am realy looking forward to that. I have played that part before with Pauline Quirke Academy in 2009.

"It was really good fun."

But he added: "It is going to be ridiculous- I'm expecting to die on stage from the heat.

"I will be sitting outside between scenes."

Dominique said: "I am very excited to get my blonde wig so I can actually sing Big, Blonde and Beautiful."

Vikki Jonsmyth- Clarke, subject leader for art and drama, said: "It is going really well. We are transforming the whole hall into the Corny Collins show.

"The students are excellent. It has been such a pleasure working with them."

Jonah added: "Come along and enjoy. It is there for you. The music is fantastic."
