MP Since - 1997 Majority - 8,028 Born - 10/03/1957 (Glasgow). Married, 3 sons, 1 daughter.
Education - Glasgow High School, Haileybury College, University of St Andrews, Cambridge University, Harvard University (JFK Scholarship 1983).
Previous Occupation - Arbitrator of Maritime Casualties (Senior Partner), Travels frequently in Eastern Europe, Lectures twice a year for the Academy of National Economy in Moscow. Member MSF/GMB Unions.
Personal Overview - Behaviour to date places him as a moderate, well educated Labour member. Somewhat rootless, having spent periods in Glasgow, St. Andrew's, Cambridge, London and the United States, he comes from a business background, which in turn has taken him on frequent visits to Eastern Europe. He is a member of the Co-operative Party and also has a history in Local Government, where he was particularly active in the areas of art and leisure. Political interests centre around a broad swathe of trade and industry issues. For other Commons members his Chamber addresses have proved pedestrian, which during one particularly taxing passage prompted a colleague to mockingly attempt to set him on fire. Still holds out against the dominant trend amongst the Labour party for beard removal. A call into Government was not thought a likelihood, but a junior position was attained for a few years. Left his job as a Prime Ministerial envoy on Forestry in September 2008 after joining the group of Labour MPs calling for a leadership contest. He became a junior Shadow Minister in July 2013 with a remit covering the Natural Environment and Fisheries.
Political History - Councillor, Cambridge City Council (1988-94), Mayor (1992-93). MP Brent North (1997-). Shadow Natural Environment and Fisheries Minister, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (2013-).
Characteristics - Experience in Business, Local Government history, practised in working in Eastern Europe. Contributes to the Philosophical Quarterly journal. It is notable that the Labour victory in 1997 ended the Parliamentary career of Victorian-throwback, and former Tory Education Minister, Sir Rhodes Boyson.
