Climate groups' ad 'misleading'

A PRO Heathrow Airport expansion campaigner has slammed two environmental groups after they were rapped by an advertising regulator.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a complaint against Airport Watch and enoughsenough.org, which accused the groups of releasing a "misleading" advert.

Clive Soley, the campaign director of pressure group Future Heathrow, said: "The adjudication is very serious. It shows that these groups, who represent some of the most vocal campaigning organisations against plans for Heathrow's sustainable expansion, have used polls and data to mislead the public.

"The public should be aware that some of their advertising is misleading and they should look at it with care."

In the ruling, made on Wednesday, March 19, the ASA warned the groups not to repeat three claims made in the advert.

The complaint was brought by Easy Jet after the advert claimed "60 per cent of people say no to more airport expansion" and the Government "tell us that aviation already accounts for 13 per cent of UK CO2 emissions - 20% if you include return flights."

It also said: "The government is encouraging the biggest expansion of airports the UK has ever seen."

All three claims were deemed to be misleading.

Clive Soley is a nasty sh*t and is trying to protect his retirement fund. What he is saying is rubbish.

What he's saying makes perfect sense to me, and he must be right because the ASA agreed. You sound rather bitter and twisted.

And Clive Soley has never used polls and data to mislead the public!!! Check out his claim about Schiphol serving more UK destinations than Heathrow - it is true BUT what he doesn't tell you is that 9 of those destinations are in the south and you wouldn't fly to them from Heathrow! In reality there are 2 UK destinations served by Schiphol that aren't served by Heathrow, but two other airports are close enough for there not to be a need from Heathrow.

He also claims Heathrow is falling behind Frankfurt and Paris in terms of destinations served - how many of those destinations are regional aiports within those vast countries? What's that quote about statistics and lies?

The findings against AirportWatch and enoughsenough largely revolve around the fact that the ads didn’t explain clearly enough the sources used rather than the facts and figures were wrong.
