A COUNCIL officer encouraged shoppers in Uxbridge town centre to vote yesterday, with the help of a woman dressed as a giant X'.

Lloyd White, head of democratic services at Hillingdon Council, urged residents to take part in the London Assembly and Mayor of London elections in May this year.

He said: "To everyone in our borough and across London we're saying: register to vote if you want to make your mark on the next four years.

"The little crosses you make on the ballot paper on May 1 are giant expressions of the way you want London to be."

For more information on how to register contact the council's electoral office on 01895 250 251 or visit www.londonelects.org.uk.

The deadline is April 16.
