CANDIDATES have been announced for an forthcoming by-election sparked by the death of a veteran local councillor.

Six candidates look set to battle it out for the Townfield ward seat on Hillingdon Council in a poll on Thursday, July 17.

Tony Eginton, who has been nominated by local MP John McDonnell, is hoping to hold the seat for Labour, fighting off challenges from Roy Chamdal for the Lib Dems and Conservative candidate Kashmir Pahal.

Lesley Corfield is representing the Green Party, Andrew Cripps is the National Front candidate, and Denis MacDonald for the British National Party completes the list of people hoping to take the seat.

They are fighting to take over from Councillor Norman Nunn-Price, who died on Friday, May 16, aged 81.

Refreshing that there is a local candidate who actually lives in Townfield running. Unusually he is a Tory but at least they see sense is someone who knows the patch and what needs doing. Maybe they will be as switched on as they were in Crewe - about time someone paid attention to Townfield and as the Tory lot run the Council perhaps they are best placed to get things done?

I nominated Tony Eginton as the labour Candidate because of his track record of hard work in Townfield ward serving as a local school governor at Minet School and on the Hillingdon Community Trust which has helped so many local groups, including contributing funds to re-open Townfield Community Centre, which the Tories and Liberals closed and to refurbish Barra Hall and the park, which the Tories and Liberals made almost derelict by neglect. In the 11 years I have been the local MP I have never seen either the Conservative or Liberal Democrat candidates at a single community meeting we have organised in Hayes to improve our area. I want local councillors that have a track record of work in our community not someone who just turns up when there is an election on.

me thinks you protests too much Mr McDonnell. Your man might be a school governer and all the other things you claim, but he's been exposed by the local conservative as the man who slinks off from Hayes to his house in the Northwood. Word is that you promoted him purely to stop an ex councillor getting back. You say 'you want local councillors that have a track record of work in our community' so what you are saying is that you run the local labour party! which translated means someone who does as you dictate. No wonder its in such a mess and the conservatives will get a local man elected.
