THE whole Labour group on Hillingdon Council walked out of a meeting in protest.

Near to the end of last night's full council meeting, the group of councillors stood up and left, angered by the "muzzling" of their views on a controversial development.

Their amendment to a motion had become irrelevant after earlier amendments had been passed by the ruling Conservative group.

The opposition group had been trying to amend a motion by Lib Dem Councillor Mike Cox which denounced the manner in which Tesco has pursued a new supermarket application in Yiewsley.

Cllr Cox's motion highlighted perceived failings in the planning process for the application, which has already been given the go-ahead.

But the Tories amended the motion, defending the planning process and accusing Councillor Cox of attacking council officers.

Labour councillors felt sidelined from the debate and staged a mass walkout to show their displeasure.

Councillor John Hensley, who had presided over the planning committee, criticised the walkout, saying: "It's disgusting and shows their contempt for the planning process.

"They have let down the people that elected them as councillors."

Just goes to Show how much respect they have to the democratic process by walking out on their responsibilitys as councillors.

Knowone can win a debate by simply walking away from it.

Instead of arguing their point they abandon it, but thats socialists for you!

Bob,

They could not ammend the motion due to the fact Labour don't have a majority!

So you think they are standing up for residents by walking out simply because they cannot get their own way?

If your common sense is as poor as your insults then I can understand why you back these clowns.

As somebody who attended last nights meeting i was shocked by the behaviour of the Labour Party.

I know the current Mayor is an ex School Teachers and he must have thought he was back in his teaching days.

1. We had Councillor Way (Labour Leader) ripping up his order paper like one big spoilt child.

2. The Labour Group storming out like Children who can't get their own way.

3. Cllr Lyn Allen shouting at the Mayor.

Shame on the Labour Party.

looks to me that the labour councillors in hillingdon are exercising their democratic right to walk away when they have been hog tied by the local tories and tescos. do let us know when there is another meeting.

Well Done Labour, you are the ones listening to local concerns and have backed the rejection of this store and others in the borough, I think to date Tesco have about 22 stores within a short drive, they are taking over and it can only be overturned with the help of local residents and the support of their councillors.
Glad you walked out and well done Cllr Allen for having your say.

Course the Tories would ok the permission. Whose pocket are they in?

How do you think Tesco got to where they are?
Not by playing by the rules surely!!

KB, I would normally agree whole heartedly but the Tesco chairman has been working as a consultant of some kind with Tony Blair and now Gordon Brown - Political Parties are so alike that they appear to be using each others tactics, consultants...anythi
ng that involves wasting out money and dare I say earning some money! I honestly do feel sorry for Yiewsley because Yeading Tesco is a nightmare to live near and I know many people from a long way of in Hillingdon travel to Yeading and that would stop when Yiewsley opens....good for Yeading, not so good for Yiewsley. Gay Brown and her supporters have been fighting for years all to no avail which is a shame

the labour councillors are a bunch of hypocrites. what other party would have a 'labour' man seeking to become a councillor, who has his own business in Buckinghamshire/ owns a huge house in Northwood/has a holiday home in Francais and is deemed suitable to help the people in the most poverty stricke ward in the Borough. What is he intending to do, give the crumbs from his table to the poor. If the Labour Party think he has a chance against a local small business man who owns a shop that is used by local people, who all know him; then they are very mistaken.

the local conservatives have a lot to answer for. The have two 'disabled' councillors who manage quite well out of their wheelchairs. They have another who was arrested recently, now its gone very quiet, why? then there is the councillor that looks and smells like a tramp. several others who appear to collect the money and do bu55er all. and now someone moans because there is someone with a bit of class in the wings. shame he doesnt live in the Haye area but then the local MP always gets what he wants.
