Mount Vernon: fighting again

MOUNT Vernon Hospital's Cancer Centre could be saved following the collapse of a scheme for a "super hospital".

Plans were revealed in 2003 for the world-renowned cancer centre in Rickmansworth Road, Northwood, to be moved to a new hospital to be built in Hatfield by 2013.

But now health bosses from the East of England Strategic Health Authority and the Hertfordshire Primary Care Trust have revealed they do not have the money for the new hospital.

Hillingdon MPs have joined together and vowed to fight to keep cancer services at Mount Vernon.

MP for Ruislip and Northwood, Nick Hurd (Con), told the Hillingdon Times: "We said at the time when they decided to move the cancer centre to a hospital in Hatfield that it was unacceptable. That plan is now dead because it is unaffordable.

"So we are launching a campaign that says get behind Mount Vernon.

"It is the affordable solution.

"Here we have got the equipment, we have got the people and we have got the support of the community, it is the most convenient place for the two million people in the west London cancer network."

John Randall MP (Con, Uxbridge), said: "It's very important. If we get the real community support which I know is there, I think we can secure the cancer base, just as is now happening at Harefield with the heart service."

John McDonnell MP (Lab, Hayes and Harlington), told the Hillingdon Times: "This a cross-party, completely united campaign to retain cancer services on the site.

"People who are very sick should not be travelling far away for their treatment and Mount Vernon is the ideal solution."

Community support has always been huge from residents of Hillingdon to keep cancer services at Mount Vernon. Campaigns, petitions and fund-raising have all been in place since the centre first came under threat in 1997.

In 2003, the Hillingdon Times ran a campaign to keep cancer services at Mount Vernon and 4,620 signed coupons poured into our offices ,along with hundreds of letters of support from patients past and present, campaigners, health professionals, MPs and concerned residents.

Joan Davies, from Community Voice, an umbrella organisation for local groups, said: "There is the community support here, absolutely. The outrage when it was first suggested it would be moved to Hatfield was huge. Mount Vernon has always had astronomical support from Hillingdon residents."

Hertfordshire primary care trusts said that because the Hatfield hospital had fallen through, cancer services would remain at Mount Vernon - for the short term. But said it was still their intention to move parts of the cancer centre in the future.

Nick Hurd MP said: "We need to send the signal in now. The wheels of decision-making turn so slowly and we now need to force the pace and say we need a decision in support of Mount Vernon now."

It is hoped Mr Hurd's online campaign will be up and running by this weekend.

I warmly welcome the decision to keep cancer services at Mount Vernon - the correct location for local residents, and even for those coming from further afield.

Dear Sir
The news of the demise of the project to build a new ‘ super hospital’ at Hatfield for the West Herts PCT, who’s intention was to transfer the Cancer Centre at Mount Vernon Hospital to Hatfield has been received with jubilation by all the supporters of Mount Vernon Hospital and beyond.

As a member of The Community Voice, an umbrella group interested in good NHS services in N.W. London, S.W. Herts. Hillingdon and Harrow etc., we have been, amongst other things, campaigning for at least ten years to retain cancer services at Mount Vernon Hospital.

Our hospital has suffered at the hands of NHS bureaucrats over the years. Control of the Cancer Centre and other parts of the hospital have been passed to Watford Herts., some years ago. The biggest loss would have been the Cancer Centre which was to be moved to Hatfield. Now that this threat has gone, every effort must be made to return the Cancer Centre to the control of Hillingdon Hospital where it rightly belongs.

MVH Cancer Centre is second to none, the care and attention patients receive is unsurpassed. The Cancer Centre is backed up by The Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre, The Paul Strickland Scanner Centre, which is privately funded and possibly the most advanced scanner centre in Europe. The Michael Sobell Hospice, the Marie Curie Wards. The Bishops Wood Hospital on the MV site also uses the Cancer Centre. The threat of closure has prompted the renowned Grey Laboratory to move. They require a working cancer centre to continue their research and the need of the cancer centre was mutual.

Unlike Hillingdon PCT, with its massive deficit, Hillingdon Hospital manages it finances very well with no deficit. There has been a lot of building going on at Mount Vernon, new bunkers and linear accelerators for the Cancer Centre, the building of the new Treatment Centre is due to start soon. It makes no sense to move a perfectly good Cancer Centre and risk the loss of all these support services not to mention the patients having to travel great distances for treatment, possibly to Hammersmith or Charing Cross. Having done a lot of petitions, I have never heard a bad word about Mount Vernon Hospital and the Cancer Centre or Harefield Hospital for that matter. It is time the powers that be do the right thing by Mount Vernon and secure the future of the Cancer Centre thus also securing the whole MV site and the future of it greatest asset, the doctors, nurses and all the staff who have been living with uncertainty all these years.

Isn't it strange that the Patients and Carers who have had experience of Mount Vernon Cancer Centre shout loud and clear on this website that they want the Centre to remain where it is! Why do NHS Administrators and Pen-Pushers not LISTEN to them? My husband's cancer killed him in 5 months, from diagnosis to death. The fact that he received in-patient and out-patient treatment in local hospitals (Watford, Harefield and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre) was an important factor in easing a dreadful period in our lives.

Mount Vernon Cancer Centre has, over the years, grown in size and reputation. It is well established and performing an excellent service to those who badly need it. A move would be costly and disruptive and could not improve the service that the patients currently receive. In short - if it's not broken don't fix it.
