A BRUNEL University student won a gold medal as part of the Great Britain Under-23 women’s team at the European Cross-Country Championships last weekend.
Jessica Andrews, a first-year sport sciences student, was representing Britain for the first time at the event in Belgrade.
She finished 16th, while her teammates Charlotte Purdue, Kate Avery and Lilly Partridge finished third, fourth and fifth. Rhona Auckland and London 2012 Olympian Laura Weightman were seventh and eighth.
Jessica is trained by distance specialist Mick Woods, who also trains Purdue and Partridge.
“To finish with team gold, standing on the podium and singing the national anthem was amazing!” said Jessica, who comes from the Isle of Wight.
Jessica will now go on to represent Brunel at the British Universities Cross-Country Championships in Stirling, Scotland, in February.
She will be contending for a place on the GB team at the World Student Cross-Country Championships in Uganda in March.
Students from Brunel have represented Britain at many major championships, and 11 Brunel alumni competed in the London Olympics.
