A LANDLORD was caught renting out an illegal outbuilding as a place to live after a joint dawn raid by Hillingdon Council’s enforcement teams and the UK Border Agency.

The illegal brick outbuilding was discovered in the back garden of a property at 34 Gledwood Drive, Hayes.

The landlord’s main house had also not been licensed as a house of multiple occupation, even though seven people were living there. Fire and safety regulations were also not being met.

Five of the people from the main house were arrested by the Border Agency for allegedly not having permission to remain in the UK.

Action will be taken by enforcement officers, including serving enforcement notices on the landlord, to stop such illegal practices.

Councillor Keith Burrows, cabinet member for planning, transport and recycling, said: “We will take firm action against anyone caught breaching planning laws and housing regulations, which are in place to protect the community.

“This could result in court appearances and severe financial penalties.”

The news follows the prosecution of a married couple in Uxbridge last September by Hillingdon Council for ignoring health and safety requirements. They were fined more than £58,000.

Anyone suspecting someone of breaching planning or housing regulations should contact the council on 01895 250230.
