STUDENTS from Northwood School had 'A Day on Site' with BAM Construction, who are building the new Heathrow Aviation Engineering University Technical College adjacent to their school.

Brian Kelly, BAM's project manager, said there were weekly meetings with students.

"We bring them on site to spend time with us learning how a construction site is run on a daily basis.

"We cover everything from the health and safety requirements, how machines work, the build programme, what people do, managing the budget and working with the community.”

Northwood pupil Ryan O’Sullivan, 16, said: “It’s been useful to understand how the team works together and their different roles in building this new school.”

Construction of the new £10m UTC building, which will open this year, is well under-way, with the main engineering workshop visible at the heart of the building.

Heathrow UTC is now recruiting for its first intake in September 2014.

Students aged 14-19 who have a passion for engineering are encouraged to attend an open event. The next is on Tuesday, March 18, 6-8pm at Northwood School.
