A POSTMAN from Hayes is running the London Marathon to raise funds for the NSPCC, after being prompted by his wife’s memories of childhood abuse.

Andy Allen, 42, has witnessed the lasting devastation child abuse can cause and how it can span into adulthood.

Mr Allen, a father of four and grandfather of one, has helped his wife overcome her problems and move forward with her life following her abuse.

Initially unsuccessful, in the ballot for marathon places, Mr Allen later received an email from the NSPCC asking if he wanted to run when another entrant dropped out.

He seized the opportunity, despite having only 11 weeks’ training time as he wanted to raise money for this excellent cause.

He says he stays in shape through yoga classes, regular gym trips and his work as a postman, not to mention running around after his children and grandchild.

His target is £2,000 and he is just a quarter of the way there.

Michael Rowlands, of Ruislip, is running on Sunday for the Royal Air Forces Association.

He is aiming to raise £1,700 for a charity that offers friendship, help and support to current and former serving RAF personnel and their families.

Ian Mitchell, from Uxbridge, is running for Starlight Children’s Foundation, a charity that grants the once-in-a-lifetime wishes of seriously and terminally-ill children and provides entertainment in hospitals and hospices across the UK.
