SPRING into the month of May with a 60s night out, brisk bike ride or flower arranging demonstrations. Here are my top five suggested items in the borough for under £5.

Tuesday, April 29

Harefield Library continues its remembrance of the centenary of World War One with an evening of poetry from some of the period’s most acclaimed wordsmiths, including Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and Vera Brittain. Entry is free, but booking for the event is essential on 01895 558184. The evening begins at 7pm and runs through until 9.

Thursday, May 1

Hillingdon residents wishing to try their hand at the delicate art of flower arranging should head down to The Village Hall, Swakeleys Road, Ickenham. From 7:30-10pm, guests will be given a demonstration, with information on the flowers and plants to be used. Entry is £3.

Friday, May 2

If you know your Rolling Stones from your Supremes, get on down to The Yacht Club, Sanderson Road, Uxbridge, for an evening of 60’s soul, ska, psychedelia and pop. Entry is free, with the DJ spinning classics from 9pm through to 2am.

Saturday, May 3

In celebration of May Day, crafts, stalls and games will be at The Green, West Drayton, from midday to 5pm. Events include a traditional procession and crowning of the May Queen, maypole and morris dancing, plus face painting.

Sunday, May 4

Meeting up at Uxbridge Station at 10am, cyclists will take a jaunt to Windsor using both on and off-road cycle routes. There will also be time along the way to stop off at the castle and pick up a few souvenirs.
