THIS week, free events abound around Hillingdon to commemorate the centenary of the start of World War One. These and others make up this week’s top five suggested items in the borough for under £5.

Monday, August 4

As part of the libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge, children aged 6-11 are invited to Oak Farm Library, Hillingdon, for a morning of theatrical challenges. Can you help the ferocious minotaur track down his party guests in this interactive one-hour drama session? The free event begins at 11am.

Tuesday, August 5

Natural materials galore are required from a morning hunt at Colne Valley Park Visitor Centre. The Wild Impressions session, from 11am until midday, gives children the opportunity to create their own masterpiece using these materials, combined with paint, glue and stamps. It’s £2 per child and booking is essential via email at jessica.green@groundwork.org.uk or telephone at 01895 833 375.

Wednesday, August 6

A free community fete at Botwell Green Library welcomes families for four hours of activities, starting at 1pm. The First World War commemorative event includes maypole dancing, games and songs, plus the opportunity to train to be a soldier.

Friday, August 8

Continuing the First World War events, a free sing-a-long and tea party will run at Harlington Library from 2-4pm.

Sunday, August 10

Ahmadiyya Muslim Association is hosting a neighbourhood Eid party, to promote peace and harmony. The event, at Baitul Amn Mosque, Royal Lane, Hillingdon, runs from 3.30-5.30pm and will include an exhibition, the opportunity to discuss religious and social issues, plus the chance to learn more about the Muslim faith. To attend, contact Mr Ahmed via email on mansur.amj@gmail.com, or telephone 07521588466.
