ADULTS with learning disabilities, complex needs and mental health issues are celebrating their independence after moving into a supported housing development in West Drayton.

Swan House is one of Hillingdon Council's newest centres as part of an initiative to enable greater independence among vulnerable residents in the borough.

The eco-friendly building contains 24 self-contained flats, each with a bedroom, living room, wet bathroom and TeleCareLine system, providing a 24/7 emergency response service.

Residents have their own tenancy agreement, pay their own bills and are supported by a team of 12 staff to lead an active, healthy and independent life in the community.

Marc Upjohn, manager of the positive behaviours support team, said: "Moving into their own flat is an important step forward in the lives of the people we support and their families.

"This type of personalised, flexible care offers safety and security while promoting independence and enabling them to be a part of the community."

In contrast to residential care homes, residents receive assistance to live independently in their own flat but still with the peace of mind that there is support close by if needed.

Diane, a resident of Swan House, said: "I am really happy with my new flat. It's a nice place and better than where I lived before. I feel really safe here."

Residents are also invited to take part in drop-in activity sessions, from life skills training to arts and crafts, held in the communal lounge and garden areas.

Swan House resident Lloyd, said: "I have made friends here and can visit my friends who live next door or go to the communal room and play bingo."
