YOUTH Parliament members from Hillingdon made their voices heard at its annual sitting in the House of Commons on Friday.

Courtney Thompson, Serife Gunal and Katie Turner joined 300 members aged 11-19 to debate five topics in the chamber, treading in the footsteps of elected MPs.

Debates were chaired by the Speaker, John Bercow, and were broadcast on BBC Parliament.

These discussions helped the UKYP members decide which two topics should become their priority campaigns for 2015-16.

Katie Turner, from Hillingdon, was given the opportunity to make a short speech about work experience and careers.

Cllr David Simmonds, cabinet member for children’s services in Hillingdon, told us: “They did an excellent job of representing our borough on the national stage.”

UKYP members were also given a tour of Westminster and took part in a Q&A session with Mr Bercow.

A living wage for everyone and improving mental health services were chosen as the priority campaigns for 2015-16.
