A NUMBER of Britain’s leading firms are backing the proposed expansion of Heathrow, believing it to be the best way to secure the economy.

The news comes on the back of a survey published yesterday by the manufacturers’ organisation (EEF), ahead of the Airport Commission’s final consultation on expansion, taking place next Tuesday.

According to the EEF’s survey, 79% of companies backed the expansion, which may result in the total restructure of several Hillingdon villages, deeming it of critical importance for export trade.

Jim Davison, London and South East Region Director at EEF, said: “Expansion at Heathrow is clearly the best option for business and the country overall.

“Airport capacity is critical to industry. Our economy cannot wait any longer and we now need spades in the ground as soon as possible.”

Campaign groups have protested against the proposed expansion since public consultation began in November 2007.

John Stewart, chair of anti-noise group HACAN, said: “The downsides of a third runway are so great it should have been ruled out years ago.

“Thousands of people will lose their homes and thousands more will be seriously disturbed by the constant noise of aircraft flying overhead.”

It is hoped that the Airport Commission will consider the protests of campaign groups in its final consultation.

However, given the increasing importance of exports to the UK economy, EEF believes additional airport capacity will only become more critical.

“It soars ahead of all other options,” said Mr Davison.
