AN adventurer is well on his way to achieving a personal goal of visiting a pub close to all 270 stations on the London Underground.

Next stop for Sam Cullen is Hillingdon station – and he’s looking for Hillingdon Times readers to suggest the best boozer within walking distance of it.

Sam, 27, a local government worker, began his odyssey in March 2013. He had always wanted to do a pub review blog and was looking for the right hook.

At the time, the Tube was celebrating its 150th birthday and that inspired him to start.

“I decided to visit the stations in the order they opened, rather than by line or zone, starting at Paddington, where the first service ran in January 1863,” said Sam, originally from Brighton, who moved to London for university.

“My rules are simple: it doesn't have to be the closest pub to the station, but it can't be closer to any other station.

“I review both the pub and the station itself, especially where there are interesting architectural designs, like many of Charles Holden’s on the Piccadilly Line, in particular the striking façade and station building at Uxbridge.

“Hillingdon will mark my 180th stop on the journey. It’s been a fantastic experience so far as its taken me from historic taverns down narrow streets in the Square Mile to rural landscapes at the end of the Metropolitan Line and traditional country pubs.”

He researches where to go before setting off and has had countless excellent recommendations via Twitter.

He said: “I'd love to hear from Hillingdon residents where they recommend I visit. I have other stops to visit in the nearby area, too. I carry a list of the next 20 stations coming up on the site.”

(http://innsidetrack.wordpress.com) Stations he has already visited in the borough are Northwood, Ruislip, Uxbridge, Ickenham, Eastcote and Ruislip Manor.

Still on his ‘to do’ list are Northwood Hills, West Ruislip, South Ruislip, Hatton Cross, Heathrow Terminals 1-3, Heathrow Terminal 4 and Heathrow Terminal 5.

Sam added: “I checked when I first started the blog there were pubs on the land-side of each Heathrow terminal, although friends have suggested I tie in at least one of the Heathrows with a flight somewhere!”
