HILLINGDON’S work to stop unsafe products from being imported into the UK through Heathrow has been praised by the head of National Trading Standards, Lord Toby Harris.

The borough’s trading standards team has been working with its Hounslow counterpart to run the Heathrow Safety at Ports project since 2013.

Lord Harris visited the Civic Centre in Uxbridge on Tuesday, April 21, to recognise the good work.

Cllr Jonathan Bianco, Hillingdon’s cabinet member for business services, said: "Intercepting faulty goods as they enter the country is the most efficient way of protecting consumers and businesses.

“Since it began at Heathrow, investigations and enforcement have helped to save more than £2m per year and kept dangerous products off the shelves."

In the last financial year, Hillingdon trading standards officers investigated 66 consignments and sent 110 samples of products away for further testing.

Examples of goods they are often required to inspect include electrical equipment, cosmetics, toys, sunglasses and LED light bulbs.
