BUDDING bakers are encouraged to whip up home-made cakes for a baking competition celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday for Michael Sobell Hospice in Northwood this summer.

The event will take place at the annual Michael Sobell Hospice Vintage Affair on Sunday July 10 at the Michael Sobell Centre, Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood, from 10.00am-5.00pm.

The culinary competition entitled ‘Cake fit for a Queen’ will be judged on the day by resident chef Denise Phillips, with the winning cake going on sale to help raise funds for Michael Sobell Hospice – which needs more than £1.6 million pounds of funding each year.

Michael Sobell Hospice PR and marketing manager Sam Heggie said: “Dust off your rolling pins, get baking, and show off your inner Masterchef in celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday, and in turn help raise vital funds for Michael Sobell Hospice.

“The competition is open to anyone who enjoys baking and wants to have a go.”

As well as the ‘Cake fit for a Queen’ competition, guests will be treated to a selection of classic cars on show,  live music, a variety of stalls selling vintage clothing, china,  jewellery, a raffle and tombola, plus afternoon tea will be served all day.

“This event is not just for adults,” added Sam. “Jimmy Jam Tots Bear will also be making a special guest appearance for children on the day.”

Entry is £2 for adults with children going free and parking is available on site.

All money raised goes towards the vital work of Michael Sobell Hospice in providing specialist palliative care to local patients facing life-limiting illness across Herts, Bucks and Middlesex.

A special cake kindly donated by Wenzel’s bakery went on display in the charity’s Northwood shop last week in promotion of the competition and in celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday.
