More than 146 people have been arrested during a two-month campaign to combat drink and drug driving

The campaign, which ran throughout June and July, saw officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit target motorists driving under the influence of drink and drugs.

A total of 146 arrests were made for drink or drug driving-related offences, compared to 164 in the same period last year.

In Watford, 22 arrests were made, compared to 13 in the same period last year. Fourteen were arrested in Hertsmere, 12 in St Albans and nine in Three Rivers.

Roads policing inspector, Phil Bloor, said: “While it’s disappointing to see people continuing to get behind the wheel whilst under the influence, it’s encouraging to see that we are catching and arresting those putting themselves and others in danger.

“Any amount of drink or drugs in your system can affect your ability to drive and so we always encourage motorists to have none for the road.

“Although the campaign has come to an end, our focus on drink and drug driving has not.

“I want to make it clear to motorists that we always prioritise bringing offenders driving under the influence to justice.”
