Barriers could be put up to prevent travellers making themselves at home in a Watford beauty spot.

Watford Borough Council is consulting with residents after travellers continue to set up camp in Oxhey Park.

The site has been occupied three times in the last six months.

Oxhey ward cllr Peter Taylor said: “There have been big improvements in Oxhey Park in recent years.

“It got the highest mark out of the town's eight green flag parks this year. We can't allow it to be spoilt in this way and will be taking action to prevent it happening again.”

Cllr Taylor said the council is deciding on the type of barrier or fence to use. So far, around 250 residents have taken part in the consultation.

On Tuesday, five caravans invaded the park, which is owned by the borough council.

Earlier this month, a group of around 20 caravans camped for three days, and in May the same happened.

Eyewitnesses have reported vans honking horns as the groups drive in to the site and large amounts of rubbish being left when they leave.

Elected Mayor of Watford Dorothy Thornhill said: “We have now served an eviction notice on the travellers who are illegally camped in Oxhey Park.

"We have never had consecutive traveller incursions in the park prior to these three incidents.

"We are asking the community for their views on installing a new fence or barrier around the park.

"We don’t want to spoil the openness of our beautiful, Green Flag award-winning park, but now travellers have returned for a third time, taking action is our top priority. We will do everything we can to stop this from happening again.”

The council's grounds maintenance partner Veolia absorbed the cost of cleaning up.
