Despite predictions of torrential rain, more than 1,000 children took part in fun runs in Moor Park.

The races, that are held at Merchant Taylors’ School, have so far raised more than £40,000 for the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre.

More than 700 runners also took part in the 10k run on September 25 and the winners were Kerr Millar and Sasha Birkin.

The 2012 shield was awarded to Charlotte House Preparatory School, which had the highest number of students involved.

Tired runners were offered sports massages at the end of the race and there were activities and bouncy castles for children.

Organiser Buzz Coster said: “We were absolutely delighted with how things went. We had been a bit worried about the weather but the rain held off which always make for a better day.

“The record number of children taking part was phenomenal – a massive increase on last year with the addition of a second race for the under-7s.

“We are immensely grateful to the local schools who promoted and supported the event and hope the children had a lot of fun too.

“As always, we are indebted to the multitude of people who help organise the day. Many of our volunteers turn out each year to help, assisting with IT, running stalls, giving out medals, marshalling and a host of other jobs.

“They help to create the special family atmosphere for which the event has a great reputation and we couldn’t do it without them – thank you, team.”

Plans are already under way for next year’s event. The races have raised approximately £575,000 for charity since they started in 2002.
