A library celebrated its 80th birthday last week with a number of displays showing its long history.

On September 30 Bushey Library, in Sparrows Herne, held a special event commemorating the 80th birthday of the library.

Guests included Andrew Bignell, head of libraries for Hertfordshire County Council, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Hertsmere Cllrs Peter Rutledge and Jane West.

Mary Malone, Bushey Library manager, said: "We have some displays including newspaper clippings from the opening and old photographs showing how the library used to look.

"Everyone had a great time looking at the pictures and several of our older customers enjoyed reminiscing about how things used to be.

"One of our borrowers donated books to the library as a child in September 1944 which we found a record of in an old ledger in our archives.

"Linda Giles, who has been a member since her father enrolled her at the age of seven, has been an active borrower ever since and Mrs Giles attended the celebrations with us."

"Wenzels The Bakery very kindly gave us a cake as a birthday gift which our customers very much enjoyed."

Bushey Library was opened by Sir Frederic Kenyon, chief librarian of British Museum, on September 30, 1936.

The displays will be up for the next two weeks so anyone who wants to see the history of the community library will be able to.
