A road sign has been declared “safe” despite leaning at such an angle that it is nearly doubled over.

The one way sign on St Johns Road was spotted by Hertfordshire county councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst, who raised the issue with the council’s highways department.

However he received a response saying his report had been assessed and subsequently “considered safe”, meaning it would not require immediate action.

A project to clean road signs across the county so that they “look good” is currently underway.

The leaning sign has been added to a list of possible future works, despite Cllr Giles-Medhurst saying it was at risk of toppling over.

“I assume the county council will pick up any personal or damage claims if it does, given the refusal to do anything,” he added.

Ringway, the company which carries out road repairs on behalf of the council, has been contacted for comment.
