Gathered on the frosty paths and fields of Cassiobury Park on Sunday were hundreds of runners dressed as their favourite Christmas characters.

This year’s Santa Dash, in support of Watford Mencap, was attended by more than 250 people runners who took on either the 1km or 5km courses.

Among the runners on the day were the Morrissey family. Dad John and mum Claire pushed their son Kenny, 12, round the shorter course before John went on to complete the 5km straight afterwards.

Kenny attends Watford Mencap’s after-school club for children with learning disabilities.

John said: “Without the support of Watford Mencap in our community, children and families would struggle to cope and lead a normal happy life. Their time and compassion know no boundaries and bring hope and solace to those blessed with disabled children.”

The 5km race was won by Ross Connor of Watford Harriers, who completed the course in 17 minutes and 29 seconds.Watford Observer:

The best costume prizes were won by six-year-old Eddie, who was very appropriately dressed as the North Pole in the 1km race, and Dominic Hall who was dressed as The Grinch in the 5km race.

Carol Tunstall, fundraising manager with Watford Mencap, said at the time: “We have had a fantastic turnout today. The atmosphere in the park was incredible. The festive costumes helped to create the feeling of a big family celebration. Everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.”

The race, sponsored by Warner Brothers Studios Leavesden, raised more than £6,000 which will be used to help fund Watford Mencap’s children’s centre, supporting families with a child or young person that has a learning disability.
