Temperatures are set to fall towards the end of this week – in what could spell the start of what is traditionally a cold spell.

Met Office records show that the coldest January temperatures have been recorded towards the end of the month nine times in the past 15 years.

Over the last two years the thermometer has hit its lowest point on January 19.

Last week a yellow “be aware” warning for snow and ice was in place on Friday across south west Hertfordshire after the Met Office warned showers of snow, sleet and hail would spread across the county.

Temperatures at the beginning of the week will raise, with a maximum temperature of 10C on Monday.

Rain and hill fog is expected to ease during Monday morning, making way for a cloudy and dry afternoon with light winds.

Tuesday will be cloudy and relatively mild and rain and hill fog will come and go throughout the day.

The weather will turn drier with some brightness on Wednesday and Thursday.

But while the weather should remain dry for most part of the end of this week, temperatures are set to plunge back down to near freezing point.
