South west Hertfordshire is likely to be colder than Iceland this week as an icy snap brings freezing temperatures and a chance of snow.

Plunging temperatures will see freezing nights as a cold spell sweeps from Wednesday and lasting through the weekend.

Temperatures will plummet from a mild 10C on Tuesday to lows of 0C and -2C overnight on Wednesday and Thursday as forecasters warn the county could see snow showers.

Flurries of snow could descend on Thursday and Friday as the temperatures drop several degrees lower than Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

Forecasters predict day temperatures on Wednesday are to be around 5C, two degrees lower than Reykjavik’s 7C.

The plunge in temperatures follows last Friday’s severe weather alert after experts forecast torrential rain and gusty winds would batter the county.

Last month the county was also beset with bouts of freezing fog.
