An Ealing couple have lost their legal battle to have a civil partnership as opposed to a marriage.

The Court of Appeal ruled that Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidan did not, as a heterosexual couple, have the right to enter a civil partnership

The couple intend to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Green London Assembly member Caroline Russell appealed to Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to express support civil partnerships in the wake of the ruling.

She said: “I am extremely disappointed on behalf of Rebecca and Charles, who wanted access to a legal recognition to their relationship that already exists.

“The ruling goes against true equality — the law should properly reflect the values modern couples hold and their desire to have these principles reflected in the legal recognition of their relationships.

“I will continue to push the Mayor to fulfil his promise to lobby the Government to change the law on equal civil partnerships.”

The Isle of Man is currently the only area of the British Isles where heterosexual couples can enter civil partnerships.
