A college in Hertfordshire has announced its intention to merge with another in London.

The proposed merger between West Herts College in Watford and Stanmore College in Harrow arose during the London component of the national post-16 area review process, which examines further education strategy across the country.

Both colleges believe the merger “aligns fully with the aims and objectives of the area review process”.

According to a joint statement released by the two colleges, each campus of the merged entity will “maintain its importance and excellence, while at the same time creating a cohesive network of learning hubs building on the strengths of both existing colleges”.

It adds: “This will ensure a sustainable long-term future and the best possible opportunities for students."

Collectively the merged college will consist of four campuses, offering comprehensive technical and professional education along the M1 corridor across north London, Watford, Kings Langley and Hemel Hempstead.

It will help 5,500 young people and 10,000 adults access study programmes across the four hubs.

The merger process is now underway, with due diligence and consultation with stakeholders still in the early stages.
