Dangerous fence posts and antisocial parking on the Harebreaks estate could soon be resolved thanks to the collective voice of residents living there.

Following a petition headed by Ian Stotesbury, Liberal Democrat candidate for North Watford, Watford Community Housing Trust has agreed to take action over parking issues in the area, as well as several damaged post-and-rail fences.

At a meeting with the trust, Mayor Dorothy Thornhill presented the petition signed by hundreds of residents calling for a consultation on parking.

She also aired their concerns that damaged grass verges were not being repaired in an appropriate timeframe.

The trust has now confirmed it is stepping up efforts to monitor any damage, and will prepare a consultation around the parking and fencing issues.

Petition organisers Ian Stotesbury and Councillor Robbie Laird said it was good news for residents.

They said: “It’s clear from speaking to so many residents and walking the estate regularly that many extra parking bays can be provided while still keeping the area green.

“Residents will be consulted over improvements about getting extra parking and enhancing the green areas.

“Also we perhaps need better than just wooden posts. People power can work but to keep the pressure on, residents can still sign the petition online.”

Cllr Laid added: "I am pleased that the trust has listened to our concerns and seems to be acting quicker to get dangerous post-and-rail fencing fixed, it’s just a pity that the county council is still taking so long over the many potholes in the area."

Chris Ellison, assistant director of customer services at the trust, said: “We have listened to the concerns of Harebreaks residents and are pleased to be working with them to address parking issues and improve the local area.

"We have been working in partnership with Watford Borough Council and Herts County Council to prevent parking on green spaces in Watford, and the Harebreaks is no exception.

"We have stepped up our efforts to repair damaged posts and rails and we will be consulting on further changes to ensure that a pleasant environment is maintained for the community.”
