Watford MP Richard Harrington, who voted to remain in the EU, described it as a “historic day” for Britain.

“Regardless of how we voted in the referendum, we all want the same thing; to see a Britain that is stronger than it is today, and I’m confident that we can achieve this,” he said.

“As many of you know, I voted to remain in the European Union but today we have to put these divisions behind us, come together and focus on getting the best possible deal for a global Britain.

“The British people have had their say and voted to change our country for the future, and I respect that entirely.

“I believe in our democracy but more importantly I believe in our country, and I am convinced that the United Kingdom will emerge from Brexit with a stronger, fairer economy that works for everyone.

“Our Prime Minister Theresa May has demonstrated that she is the right person for the job, while the opposition have proven that they can’t be trusted. It’s because of my belief in the Prime Minister that I know we can make a success of this.
