A first-class science graduate will swap lab coats for ball gowns when she competes in a national beauty pageant.

Rachel Pitman graduated from the University of Reading with a first-class science degree in 2013, but the 23-year-old from St Albans has followed a path less taken by science students by becoming Miss Hertfordshire 2017.

Following five rounds that included a fitness test, charity round and black dress competition, Miss Pitman won her place in the Miss England finals that take place in July.

She said: “I have the amazing chance to represent Hertfordshire at the Miss England finals – I still feel like I’m dreaming but I’m eager to get started on making my mark.

“I am determined to make a difference with my title so would love to get involved with any local charity events or help local businesses.

“I’m currently juggling a full-time career, two volunteering roles and many charity events so I’m very busy in the lead up to the finals but I love it.

“I have some big boots to fill after the last Miss Hertfordshire, Francesca Hadley, placed 5th overall in the last competition, I’m ready to do her some justice.”

The Miss England Grand Final will take place on July 14 at Resorts World Birmingham.
