A public transport campaigner has raised the concerns of some in the community about an infrequent bus which serves South Oxhey.

The number 8 bus, which links South Oxhey and Watford, has been singled out by Roy Telfer, a resident of the area for more than 60 years.

Mr Telfer, 88, said: “The service is only half-hourly during off-peak times and if one bus is cancelled there is a long wait for the next bus which will of course be standing room only, and the majority of passengers on the number 8 service are elderly or handicapped.

“More important is the concern over the problem that residents will suffer once the demolition of the Charter Place redevelopment begins. Many more residents will want to shop elsewhere, which will put a burden on those residents who wish to travel to Watford, our nearest shopping facility.”

Mr Telfer added: “The problem is that the county council will not supply Arriva with enough subsidy. You get the impression the county council don’t think it’s their problem.”

A spokesman for Arriva Southern Counties, which runs the bus service, said: “Arriva takes its service responsibilities extremely seriously. We recognise the inconvenience and apologise for the service issue experienced by the passenger on the number 8 service. Arriva has reviewed the reasons behind the service delay and implemented remedial action.

“Arriva has a new management team in place and is implementing a significant investment programme in new buses and coaches – this is cascading out right across our network, now and throughout the summer months, and will enhance and improve our services, delivering improved punctuality and reliability to all of Arriva’s passengers.”

Hertfordshire county council was contacted for comment.
