Fears are growing over the future of a police station if “unacceptable” funding cuts are made.

Baldev Sharma, of Exeter Road, Rayners Lane, Harrow, is concerned the police station in Northolt Road may close.

Under the Conservative government, he says cuts of £600 million have been “imposed” on the Metropolitan Police.

To deal with this, the incoming Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick is considering merging the commands of the current borough police forces, and may sell off buildings.

Mr Sharma said: “The threat to South Harrow Police station is a bolt from the blue and as far as Harrow residents are concerned, it is unacceptable.

“It should now become one of the General election issues for all the Parliamentary candidates in Harrow East and Harrow West constituencies.”

Prime Minister Theresa May visited the Dhamecha Lohana Centre, in Brember Road, South Harrow earlier this month to support Conservative candidates in London ahead of the General Election on June 8.

During her visit, concerns for the future of the police station were raised.

Gareth Thomas the Labour candidate for Harrow West, said: “We’ve lost 160 officers in Harrow since 2010 – a third of the force. Some Harrow arrests are taken to Colindale already.

“The Met Police Commissioner is saying the only way to maintain police numbers at their existing strength is to close police buildings.

“If Harrow police station closes, police response times will be much slower as a result.”

However, Bob Blackman, Conservative candidate for Harrow East, said police funding was a “devolved matter that ultimately rested with Mayor Khan”.

He said: “He’s got the money and resources to determine what happens.

“I will be vigorously opposing any transfer of police away from Harrow. It’s a battle (Conservative candidate for Harrow West) Hannah David and I will fight should we be elected.”

The Metropolitan Police have been contacted for comment.
