Two men have been jailed for fraudulently taking driving exams for other people.

Adam Abeyiyi, 27, Courtsman Road, Tottenham and Tendiyi Mawere, 27, Summit Drive, Woodford Green, were caught after the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) suspected them of taking theory tests for other people in 2015.

Mawere was arrested at Watford Theory Test Centre, Cassiobury House, Watford in suspicion of fraud after suspicions were raised by one credit card that had been used to book several tests.

Abeiyi was arrested on suspicion of fraud at Mill Hill Practical Driving Test Centre, Granard Business Centre in October 2015 as he intended to take a driving test on behalf of someone else.

Mawere was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and Abeiyi to 15 months in a hearing at St Albans Crown Court on Friday, June 9.

Following evidence gathered during police interviews with Mawere and Abeiyi’s, 14 candidates were also arrested in the Metropolitan police area and were given sentences of between 8 weeks and 12 months.

DVSA’s Head of Counter-Fraud and Investigations, Andy Rice, said:

“DVSA’s priority is to protect you from unsafe drivers and vehicles and these sentences send out a clear message to those who want to defraud the driving test process.

“The driving test is there to ensure that all drivers have the skills and knowledge to use the roads safely and responsibly. Anyone who tries to circumvent this process is putting innocent road users at risk.

“Driving test fraud is a serious offence and is dealt with accordingly. We have stringent measures in place to detect fraudulent activity and work closely with the police to bring all offenders to justice.”
