While funding for the Metropolitan Line Extension appears to have dried up, plans for a new station in Watford are still being amended and updated.

Following discussions between London Underground and Watford Borough Council, plans outlining amendments to the design and layout of the proposed Vicarage Road station were recently submitted.

The proposed changes to the station include the introduction of new “back of house” escape routes to the north and south of the station, revisions to cycle stand arrangements, and amendments to external lighting.

Under the plans, the planned Vicarage Road bridge deckspan will also be removed and replaced, while new vehicle restraint systems will be installed to “facilitate the interface” with the proposed station.

Plans to amend the “urban realm” surrounding the station were also put forward.

A planning document on the council’s website points to proposals to sell the line to London Underground once it is completed, although there are still question marks over whether the scheme will ever come to fruition after the project was left out of the Mayor of London's transport plans for a second time.

Despite mentions of improvements on most other tube lines, including extensions to the Northern and London Overground lines and the opening of the new Elizabeth line, the Met Line Extension to Croxley was left out of mayor Sadiq Khan’s plans.

The project received £49 million from previous Mayor of London Boris Johnson but recent TfL cost projections show that a further £50 million will be required before construction work can progress.

The £284 million project looks to connect the Metropolitan Line in Croxley to several new stations across Watford.

People can comment on the new plans until Monday, July 17.
