Moped riders caught driving on footpaths and across parks may have their vehicles seized in a bid to crack down on dangerous driving.

Police have issued a warning to bikers in Three Rivers following continuing complaints around anti-social riding.

In recent weeks there have been instances of youths in the Croxley Green, Rickmansworth, Chorleywood and Mill End areas riding mopeds off-road.

People who are now caught riding illegally or anti-socially may be issued a written Section 59 warning under the Police Reform Act 2002.

If they are caught again within the next 12 months, police have the power to seize their moped.

If offenders do not then reclaim their mopeds and pay storage or recovery fees within a 14 day period, their vehicles can be crushed. Riders can also be reported for traffic offences.

PC Christian Gottmann from the Safer Neighbourhood Team is concerned that riders are putting themselves and the public “in danger” – particularly if they do not wear a helmet.

He said: “We have increased patrols and a number of section 59 warnings have already been issued. However, we are still seeing a few riders causing issues in the park areas, particularly during evenings and weekends.

“Riding off-road is extremely dangerous and could lead to serious consequences. In many cases, the riders are not wearing helmets so are putting themselves in danger, as well as members of the public. Riding in this way also causes damage to the land and noise nuisance.

“Anyone caught riding anti-socially will be dealt with robustly. However, we also need the public’s help to identify those who are riding in this manner. Please try and get a good description of the rider and the colour of the helmet, if they are wearing one, and make a note of any registration numbers.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
