A terminally ill journalist discusses his life and impending death in a heart-wrenching yet uplifting podcast.

Former Watford Observer reporter Simon Ricketts, 48, now works at the Guardian, the newspaper which he had always aspired to write for.

Announcing he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer last year, Mr Ricketts remained upbeat, saying: “While this is probably a shorter time on the planet than I was hoping for, I cannot truly feel too cheated.

"I really can’t. And hey, I’m not dead yet. I’m not giving up. I plan to extend my life, by whichever ways possible, as much as I can. Let’s see how we go.”

Regrets of the Dying is a podcast about life, death and regrets, with each of the eight episodes featuring a different person's story.

When first approached about featuring in the series, Simon was not sold by the idea, saying: “I don’t think I have any regrets.”

However he eventually agreed to talk with Georgina Scull in the 15-minute programme, appearing in the last episode of the series as a tonic to the more common depressed outlook that comes with a terminal diagnosis.

“Regret for me suggests something that you wish you hadn’t done, and because you wish you hadn’t done it, it kind of lives with you and sort of colours your life,” he added.

“I don’t have any of those things. I believe that everything that you do is part of who you are.”
