Commuters have faced “appalling” delays on their way to work each morning due to traffic lights at a junction being left unfixed for nearly a month.

Bridge Road Junction, in Kings Langley, was resurfaced three weeks ago by Hertfordshire County Council.

But the traffic lights at the end of the road still need further work.

The work will now be carried out overnight on a road closure on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 October and finished on Tuesday October 24.

However, leader of Three Rivers District Council cllr Sara Bedford says it has caused long traffic delays in the morning rush hour, as people have been waiting 45 minutes to get through the junctions with no available detours.

She said: “This project has seen appalling levels of mismanagement by Herts County Council and its contractors, from unsafe working practices and a failure to inform residents of the road closure, to a three week delay to get the traffic light sequence working properly again.

“The long queues in the morning have seen residents taking 45 minutes to get through the junction, with no available detours.

“The county council owes residents an apology and a guarantee to review wrong practices and procedures and ensure a fiasco of this kind doesn’t happen again.”

Cllr Ralph Sangster, cabinet member for Highways at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “We apologise for the delays at the junction on Bridge Road.

"The resurfacing works to improve this junction, which were completed on October 3, included the cutting and relaying of traffic light loops.

"Unfortunately, this work could not be completed at the time and had to be rescheduled. This work began on October 20 and we would like to thank road users for the patience.”
