Drivers are advised to find alternative routes as a busy road is set to be closed until the end of the week while “nightmare” drainage complications are resolved.

An eight-week work programme is currently underway to remove the chicanes in Nascot Wood Road, Watford, and replace them with raised tables, along with a new 20 mph zone around the local primary school and nearby streets.

However, drainage problems have since been uncovered since the work programme began and once they have been inspected, the repaired drainage trenches will be backfilled with permanent materials.

The road will open during the day by November 20 to allow the chicane removal work to continue.

Councillor Jane Johnson said: “For residents, like me, living nearby the total closure of Nascot Wood Road has been a nightmare.

“However, if this is what is necessary then we should grin and bear it as the final removal of the chicanes will be worth it.”

The road is expected to fully reopen without restrictions by December 4.

Kevin Carrol, Ringway divisional manager, working on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council to fix the drainage problem, said: "In the interest of public safety, we’ve extended the timings for the closure of Nascot Wood Road from daytime only, to 24 hours a day. This change is due to the depth of excavation works required to install the new highways drainage pipes, which have had to be completed by hand rather than machine, to avoid damage to the existing utility connections along the road.

"The new pipes need to be connected to the Thames Water drainage system and these connections must be approved by them before our excavations can be filled in. This is scheduled for early next week.  Following this, the road closure will revert to day time only for the remainder of the scheme.

"We understand the situation is frustrating for local residents and we are working as quickly as we can to complete these works. We apologise for any additional disruption this delay has caused and we aim to complete all the works required here by the end of week commencing on December 4."
