A competition for the brightest of Harrow’s 13-14 year olds will take place again next year.

The 2018 MasterMind in Harrow competition, run by mental health charity Mind in Harrow and sponsored by the Harrow Times, will see 70 pupils aged 13 to 14 from schools across the borough go head to head.

The contest will be hosted at Harrow School, and involve Year 9 pupils from the school as well as teams from Bentley Wood High School, Hatch End High School, The John Lyon School, Park High School and Whitmore School.

As part of the competition, each school must raise £1,200 as an entrance fee to support Mind in Harrow, which works with those in the borough to overcome poor mental health, including supporting young people in schools.

James Power, chaplain at Harrow School and quizmaster, said: “Harrow School is delighted to be hosting the third Inter-Schools MasterMind Quiz.

“It is a wonderful event which our boys really enjoy, the standard is always exceptionally high.

“In my capacity as vicar of St Mary’s, Harrow on the Hill, and a chaplain at Harrow School as well as “quizmaster” I am looking forward to this year’s event, not only to raise crucial funds for Mind in Harrow but to raise awareness of mental health as an issue which affects us all. Good to luck to all who are taking part. May the best team win!”

The demands on Mind in Harrow’s work is continuing, with one in four adults experiencing mental health problems and one in 10 young people being diagnosed with a mental health problem every year.

Mark Gillham, CEO of Mind in Harrow, said: “Schools have selected their keenest and brightest 13-14 year olds and the competition looks to be a closerun thing.”
