A quick-thinking six-year-old girl saved her mother’s life by calling an ambulance when she collapsed in the bathroom with a blood clot.

Daisie Murray, of Sheepcot Lane, Leavesden, was getting ready for school at 8am on January 8 when she heard her mother, Sarah Croombs, in distress in the bathroom.

Ms Croombs lying on the floor, drifting in and out of conciousness.

Although her mother was unable to move and was left feeling faint and dizzy, Daisie did not panic.

Her older sister Sophie, 15, had already left for school so she ran to find a phone, dialling 999. She calmly told the operator her mother needed an ambulance and gave them their address.

“I could see that mum was falling in and out of sleep so knew something was wrong,” Daisie said.

“I just guessed what I had to do. I remember my mum telling me something ages ago, so then I remembered that I should call an ambulance.”

An ambulance arrived within ten to 20 minutes and Daisie let the paramedics in.

Ms Croombs was rushed to A&E and admitted she did not realise the seriousness of her condition until a paramedic whispered “that was close.”

She was later diagnosed with blood clots on each of her lungs that were putting pressure on her heart.

She had been struck down with the flu a couple of weeks before, but was shocked when she discovered what had happened.

Luckily, Sarah, who has four children, had spoken to Daisie about the importance of knowing how to call an ambulance, but never expected her daughter to need the advice.

She said: “I am so proud of Daisie. She is so sensible for her age and I think she saved my life.

“My phone was in my bedroom so there was no way I would have been able to call anyone.”

Ms Croombs spent five days in hospital and is now back at home.

Daisie has been congratulated for her quick thinking by her school, Alban Wood Primary School, and was thrilled to be awarded with a certificate.

Ms Croombs added: “I’m just so thankful to my family and friends who have stepped in to help, especially with looking after Daisie and taking her to school, and making sure she eats.

“And of course to Daisie, who I am certain saved my life.”
