Hundreds of people basked in the sunshine as a beer festival returned to two village pubs.

The second annual Brewfest in Oxhey Village raised £800 for the Watford Peace Hospice on Saturday.

The sun was shining on the 500 drinkers at the festival, which is arranged by the Oxhey Village Brewery and the Oxhey Village Environment Group.

Held at the Villiers Arms and Rifle Volunteer pubs in Villiers Road, the event featured fresh pizza, face painting for younger patrons, live jazz from London’s 10 Bells Rag Band and a quiz.

There were more than 19 entries for the competition judging the best amateur brews in the area and also local-made fruit gin and vodka tasting.

The festival winning beer was Starry Nights from The Malt Brewery and the winning spirit was a fruit vodka made by local resident Richard Charnock.

Chris Newstead, from the Oxhey Village Brewery, said, “We were blessed with the good weather and the good spirits of everyone who came along. Well done to all our brewers and kitchen gin makers.

“I think the overall pint consumption exceeded a thousand on the day, which might also explain how easy it was to sell so many raffle tickets.

“But it was all for a great cause and we’re so thankful to the landlords Chris Pyrke at the Rifle Volunteer and Jason and Veronique Gutteridge at The Villiers Arms for putting on a great show. We’re already planning our 2019 festival."
