Brent Council will have a full set of councillors on June 21, after the date was announced for the outstanding Willesden Green ward.

Voting on May 3 was suspended following the death of long-standing councillor Lesley Jones, who was a candidate in this year’s election.

Carolyn Downs, Brent Council chief executive and returning officer said that, despite the sad circumstances surrounding the vote, she hopes residents in Willesden Green will continue to exercise their democratic tight.

She said: “Considering the circumstances in which a countermanded poll is held, it is both a very unusual and regrettable election for a local authority to hold.

“[But] I'd encourage everyone who is eligible in the ward to ensure that they are registered to vote and to make sure that they have their say.”

The council is accepting nominations to stand until 4pm on May 24. Any candidate that had already been nominated to stand does not need to resubmit a nomination, nor can they withdraw from the election at this stage.

Eligible Willesden Green residents have until midnight on June 5 to register to vote and have until 5pm on June 6 to apply for a postal vote.

Residents who had registered for a postal or proxy vote for the planned May 3 election in Willesden Green will need to reapply. The deadline for applying to vote by proxy is 5pm on June 13.

On the day of the vote, polls will be open from 7am to 10pm.
