A group of midwives raced through town with a cot to raise money for their appeal.
Watford General Hospital has launched a campaign, alongside the Watford Observer, to raise money for new cribs in Katherine Ward.
Last weekend, the hospital staff promoted their plight with a 'cot dash', by running through Watford Town Centre with a crib.
They asked shoppers for support along the way - and the response was overwhelmingly positive.
Healthcare assistant Jackie Fitzsimons, who launched the project last month, said: "It was amazing to see everyone support us, and loads of people donated.
"We had a lot of fun, it was a great day."
They also held a cake sale in the morning in support of their campaign.
The day raised £1,600 in total - adding to the £3,000 in donations from the JustGiving page and around £2,000 from various local companies.
It means they can buy around five of the 26 cots they hope to buy before next summer.
Each cot costs £500 to £700.
The old ones are almost three decades old and two generations have spent the first few nights of their lives in the cribs.
The mother-of-two's own daughters, 26 and 28, were born in the hospital and slept in the same cribs.
We are also looking for pledges from companies who can donate money - however big or small - to the cause.
Firms which donate will get a plaque bearing their business name on the front of the crib they have helped buy.
Are you a company and can you help sponsor a crib, or donate money towards the cost of one?
