Blocks of flats could replace a retail park.

The current site of The Range and TK Maxx in St Albans Road, Watford, has been earmarked for residential development.

Developer Berkeley Homes held an exhibition about the future of the site last week and is now running a consultation.

Liberal Democrat county councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst attended the exhibition and was told plans were for between 600-700 flats as well as a new primary school.

The development is part of the Watford Junction masterplan, which will see a major regeneration of the St Albans Road area near the station.

The Watford Junction draft development brief aims to provide nearly 3,000 new homes, retail shops, two primary schools, community spaces, and thousands of car parking spaces across four sites.

The Berkeley Homes brief says the development will include "affordable" housing. Watford Borough Council says any future developments should meet an affordable housing target of 35 per cent.

Last month, planning permission was granted to build 146 flats at the Tyre City site in St Albans Road; the first green light given to the masterplan regeneration.

When contacted by the Observer, Berkeley Homes did not confirm full details of the number of homes or what would be built on the site.

Managing director John Sanders said: “We are delighted to be working in Watford. We want to involve as many local residents, community groups, businesses and elected representatives as possible in our proposals for 94-98 St Albans Road.

“We are currently at a very early stage in the design process, and are committed to supporting the council’s vision for the masterplan, which includes benefits for the whole community.”
